Microsoft has confirmed that it will be officially discontinuing the HoloLens 2. There has been no news from Microsoft on whether or not this discontinuation will have a replacement to follow.

The Microsoft headset was launched back in February 2019 so it’s had a good 5 year run since. The headsets will be receiving security and software regression updates till 2027. However, the production of these headsets has been halted permanently. Furthermore, production for the HoloLens 1 also ended years ago. So the future of the HoloLens series is up in the air. According to reports, Microsoft has ditched plans to continue with the HoloLens 3. All hope for a new HoloLens may not be lost though, as Microsoft has alluded to potential future update plans.

HoloLens 2: More on this headset by Microsoft

HoloLens 2 is an MR (mixed reality) headset by Microsoft and it is the direct successor of the first Microsoft HoloLens. It made its debut in February 2019 at the Mobile World Congress.

The headset is compact and comparatively lighter than the Oculus Quest 2. In fact, the glasses weigh only 19.96 oz. The battery lasts up to 3 hours. Priced at $3,500, these glasses offer eye tracking and users will have to use their hands to manoeuvre around.

These smart glasses come with 64 GB of storage capacity and 4 GB RAM. The holographic display has a resolution of about 2k 3:2 light engines. The density also measures up to >2.5k radiants. Equipped with Snapdragon 850, these glasses are built with a custom Microsoft Holographic processing unit.

Meta Spark AR, Meta’s AR studio which lets third parties create AR effects will be closing down officially and the shutdown will take effect on January 14, 2025.

The tech giant stated in an official blog post on the Meta Spark Community, that the company’s decision to shut down the studio was part of its efforts to push the products that suit Meta’s customers and consumers.

Meta Spark AR: Background on the AR studio

Meta has clarified that its AR Effects will still be available to its user base. However, the company has stood on the ground, saying it will remove any or all filters that third-party developers have created. The Meta Spark shutdown will take effect on January 14, 2025. After the date of the shutdown, all third-party filters will be hence removed.

Meta Spark was launched in 2017 so it had a good 7-year run. Millions of users made AR effects in the studio. Creators could make AR effects with an existing template or build their custom AR effects with code.

The decision to shut down Spark has been met with criticism, especially from creators who use Spark to create AR effects. Many users have expressed disappointment over Meta’s decision. Some have also questioned Meta’s inner motive to get rid of the studio.

The shutdown could even affect Meta in the long run. Meta could face some trouble if it plans on going head-to-head with other social media giants. Platforms like TikTok and Snapchat provide AR developers with tools and rewards programs. Meta’s bold move to shut down its AR studio might be because the company wants to focus more on its LLM, Llama and other AI tools.

Ready by Dawn Studios, a VR game development studio has been closed down by Meta. The studio’s shutdown comes four years after Meta acquired the game studio in 2020.

According to a mid-July report, Meta announced its plans to reduce the budget of its Reality Labs by 20% which will take effect in 2026. Reality Labs is a division under Meta that takes care of VR and AR projects. Ready at Dawn Studios comes under this division and has unfortunately been affected by the budget cut.

The studio’s shutdown has come into effect immediately and all operations have been seized. In addition, Meta is steering Reality Labs to focus on other projects. Such projects include the upcoming Quest 4 and Meta Quest 4 headsets. The studio’s closure thus adds to the 20,000 job layoff period that started in 2023.

Ready by Dawn Studios: Behind the Studio

The California-based game studio was founded in 2008 by former employees at notable game studios such as Blizzard Entertainment and Naughty Dog. The studio is mostly known for developing well-known titles including the God of War series, Daxter, Okami, and The Order: 1886.

Ready at Dawn was bought by Oculus Studios in 2020 to work on VR projects for Meta. The studio released Echo Arena as its first VR project in 2017 and later released other titles in the Echo series including Lone Echo.

After Oculus acquired the game development studio, Ready at Dawn Studios started working on VR titles. The Echo series can be experienced through the Oculus Rift headset, PC and as a standalone. However, Meta had closed down Echo VR citing its lack of players for its shutdown.

Vivo’s MR headset has been officially slated for a 2025 release. This announcement was made during the company’s Imaging Festival event in China.

Hu Baishan, the company’s Vice President has previously implied Vivo’s fascination and eventual entry into the Mixed Reality market at the Boao Forum for Asia. During the event, the Vivo executive mentioned how MR represents the next significant leap for smartphones.

Vivo’s MR Headset and Everything Out About the Headset

There are currently no details about the features of Vivo’s MR headset but it is expected to offer users the standard MR experience. Oppo and Huawei, Vivo’s biggest competitors, have also been speculated to enter the MR market. However, the speculations have not been verified by the companies.

The China-based tech company is not new to the world of XR (extended reality), as the company has already dipped its toes into the AR market with its AR smart glasses. The AR smart glasses were released way back in 2019. One of their drawbacks was that the smart glasses could only be paired with the company’s 5G smartphones.

However, Vivo’s MR headset, which was announced at the Imaging Festival, might be a standalone product. This move might allow Vivo to compete with the leading MR devices such as the Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro.

The Imaging Festival is a showcase event for Vivo to announce their latest tech innovations. Vivo has also announced the Vivo X200, the company’s 2025 flagship phone. The X200 series has been stated to comprise several Bluetooth features. The BluePrint Imaging Chip, a Bluetooth image sensor and Bluetooth Algorithm Matrix are among the Bluetooth features offered.
