In an effort to challenge YouTube’s supremacy, TikTok is redesigning its desktop platform with new features targeted at improving the user experience. The social network behemoth unveiled these changes on Thursday, revealing a revamped web layout that closely resembles its mobile app. The new features include a modular layout, an updated For You feed, a new Explore tab, immersive full-screen LIVE game broadcasting, and a floating player.

Enhanced desktop layout for a seamless viewing experience

TikTok’s new desktop style aims to provide a more immersive and distraction-free experience. The redesigned navigation bar makes it easier for users to navigate, with a more streamlined appearance that resembles the TikTok mobile app. The idea is to make desktop browsing as entertaining as mobile browsing, contributing to TikTok’s dominance in short-form content creation.

The ability to stream in both portrait and landscape modes is a valuable feature for content providers. Mobile users can rotate their phones to watch in landscape mode, however, desktop users will see a horizontal view. This development enables TikTok to compete directly with Twitch and YouTube in the gaming streaming area, where both have previously been dominant.

New Collections Feature: Organize Favorite Content

TikTok is also releasing a “Collections” feature, which will allow users to organize their favorite videos into personalized categories. This function is comparable to YouTube’s “playlists,” which allow users to save and instantly revisit content. TikTok Collections will make it easier for users to organize material by topics like recipes, DIY projects, and exercise regimens. It offers a more simple way to organize and access videos over time.

Floating Player for multitasking

TikTok is launching a floating player for desktop users, which will only be available on Google Chrome. The floating window enables users to keep TikTok visible above other windows, making it easier to watch videos while working or browsing. This feature is identical to the picture-in-picture technology that is already available on YouTube, making TikTok even more user-friendly.
The introduction of the Explore tab on desktop provides users with a curated collection of information based on their interests, a feature that has proven successful on the mobile app. It lets users find new producers and content based on their tastes, so improving the overall user experience.

TikTok’s Focus on Long-Form Content and Growth

While TikTok is primarily a mobile application, these upgrades represent a significant step in improving the desktop experience. The site continues to evolve as it competes with YouTube and Twitch, particularly in the long-form content category. TikTok has already increased the length of its videos from 60 seconds to 10 minutes, and the site has tested features such as video scrubbing thumbnails and horizontal full-screen mode on mobile. These modifications demonstrate TikTok’s commitment to expanding its audience and staying current with the shifting world of digital entertainment.

TikTok has surpassed one billion users worldwide, and the platform is committed to evolving to satisfy the requirements of its varied community. TikTok is establishing itself as a major player in both short-form and long-form video content by adding new features to its desktop platform. The continual developments illustrate TikTok’s approach of challenging established giants such as YouTube and Twitch, with a focus on flexibility and engagement.

X has increased the price of its Premium+ subscription plan to roughly $50 per month, just hours after the introduction of xAI’s latest AI model, Grok 3. This represents a major price increase for users who want to utilize the most recent version of Grok. Premium+ now costs $40 per month in the United States, with a yearly plan priced at $350.
This price increase comes just months after X upped the Premium+ plan to $22 monthly from $16 in December. With the current hike, customers are paying more than double the initial fee. The corporation also increased pricing for international users, with the UK going from £17 to £35 per month and European countries including France and Germany going from €21.00 to €38.

Limited Access to Grok 3 Features as Prices Rise

Despite the price increase, those who pay for the Premium+ plan will only have access to some of Grok 3’s features. Certain xAI functions, such as “deep search” and “reasoning,” are now available through a separate SuperGrok subscription via the Grok app.

Surprisingly, the prices on different pages of X appear uneven. During sign-up, one customer discovered that the monthly pricing was $39.83 ($477.95 yearly), but the final checkout page displayed a $40 per month option. While X’s support page claims the plan costs $50 per month, the sign-up page shows $48.40, and the checkout shows $40.

These differences emphasize the confusion around X’s new price structure, particularly because its Premium+ plan now provides limited access to Grok 3. xAI’s choice to keep certain capabilities unique to SuperGrok has raised concerns about the overall value of the Premium+ plan for those seeking access to the most advanced AI tools.

As X raises its pricing, it’s evident that the company’s priority is monetizing the features surrounding Grok 3, even if the price increases have many customers questioning the worth of the Premium+ subscription.

Meta has announced the debut of Edits, a new video editing app that will compete with ByteDance’s CapCut. This news follows the removal of CapCut from Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store owing to the current TikTok ban. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced the announcement on Threads, noting that the app will be available on iOS next month, followed by an Android version shortly thereafter.

Features Designed for Creators

Edits, designed with creators in mind, provide a slew of sophisticated tools to assist users in creating great films on their mobile devices. It has a high-quality camera, a dedicated inspiration tab, and an idea-tracking tab to help with the editing process. Users can also collaborate by sending draft versions to friends or collaborators. Following publication, creators can get performance insights directly on Instagram, making it easy to track interaction.

Mosseri stressed that Edits is primarily intended for creators, rather than casual video makers. He explained that the app’s purpose is to give the greatest tools for video fans, particularly as the video editing landscape changes.

This move is consistent with Meta’s strategy of developing similar goods to address market shortages. When TikTok was prohibited in India in 2020, Meta quickly launched Instagram Reels. Similarly, in 2023, Meta launched Threads, a competitor to text-based platforms such as X. Given CapCut’s unclear future, Edits allows makers to investigate an alternate video editing program.

The app’s emphasis on professional-level tools and insights makes it a formidable competitor in the video editing arena. As Meta continues to improve, Edits may become a go-to tool for creators looking for a smooth, collaborative video editing experience.

In addition to Edits, other competitors like a16z-backed Captions are adjusting their business models to attract users. As more tools enter the market, creators will have more options for video editing, ensuring a dynamic and competitive landscape.

Shiba Inu (SHIB), one of the most famous meme-based cryptocurrencies, has sparked widespread discussion regarding its future value. Traders and investors are eager to learn how SHIB will fare in the future months. Elon Musk’s Grok, a powerful AI tool on X (previously Twitter), has predicted SHIB’s worth by January 31, 2025.

Grok’s Predictions for SHIB Prices

Grok employs complex algorithms to assess a wide range of data, including market patterns, past performance, and speculative insights. Its assessment of SHIB’s future offers a picture of both optimism and anxiety, reflecting the volatility of cryptocurrencies.

Conservative Estimates for SHIB’s Price

According to CoinCodex, SHIB is anticipated to gain 103.29% by January 8, 2025, to $0.00004592. This short-term surge indicates a promising start to the year. However, CoinCodex’s long-term forecast is more conservative. They forecast that SHIB will plummet to $0.00002287 on February 2, 2025, representing a meager 1.25% gain over current levels.
LongForecast provides a more conservative outlook, estimating that SHIB’s price would range between $0.00001258 and $0.00002175 by January 2025. Their projection predicts a drop to $0.00001353 by the end of the month, representing a 35% fall.

Optimistic Price Forecasts for SHIB

Despite the modest forecasts, some analysts are more hopeful. Gov.Capital, for example, expects that SHIB will reach $0.000271 by the end of 2025. If this bullish trend continues, SHIB could reach higher levels by January 31, 2025.
On X, speculative posts frequently predict substantially higher SHIB prices, including $0.0001 by February 2025 and even $0.01 by the end of the year. These forecasts, however intriguing, are motivated by community enthusiasm rather than serious analysis.

What Does This Mean For SHIB Investors?

As with all cryptocurrencies, there is a lot of uncertainty and wide-ranging projections. Elon Musk’s Grok has issued a mixed view for SHIB, citing both bullish and pessimistic scenarios for January 2025. Traders must be cautious as the crypto market evolves.

Apple Intelligence, the tool designed to increase your iPhone’s AI capabilities, is becoming a major storage eater. Initially launched in September 2024, it required only 4GB of available space. However, four months later, storage consumption has nearly doubled, taking up 7GB of your device’s storage. Users are concerned about the growth in space consumption, as they find their gadgets running out of space.

Downsides of Apple Intelligence

While Apple promotes on-device processing as a privacy feature, there is a catch. The corporation still analyzes your images and other content to train its AI, which may cause privacy worries for some users. Furthermore, each new update to Apple Intelligence consumes more storage, leaving less space for other programs and data. With plans to redesign Siri and incorporate AI into future upgrades, this storage creep is expected to continue.
The lack of enthusiasm for Apple Intelligence features makes things even more annoying. According to a recent SellCell poll, 73% of iPhone owners who used the AI feature reported that it offered “little to no value” to their smartphone experience. Despite the increased storage use, many users do not believe the functionality is attractive enough to justify the growing footprint.
In addition to storage difficulties, there have been allegations of increasing battery drain due to Apple Intelligence operations. The combination of excessive storage utilization and battery drain has many iPhone users wondering if the function is worth it.

As Apple continues to improve its AI-powered tools, it remains to be seen whether these capabilities will become something people desire to interact with. For the time being, Apple Intelligence appears to be more concerned with presenting erroneous summaries of news stories than with bringing genuine, useful benefits. This, combined with increased storage utilization and potential battery drain, has many users questioning whether the trade-offs are worthwhile.
To summarize, Apple Intelligence may continue to use more storage and battery life without providing the promised value. The next few upgrades will decide whether this AI function is worth the storage sacrifice.

Meta’s AI profiles are already impacting Instagram and Facebook, and not in a good way. Earlier this week, Meta chief Connor Hayes announced intentions to implement AI character profiles across its platforms. These profiles will include bios and profile photographs and the ability to develop and share AI-powered content. While the announcement drew headlines, it also prompted questions about Meta’s future reliance on bots, which could flood the platforms with low-quality, artificial content.

AI Profiles Are Not New, But The Concerns Are Growing

Meta’s concept of AI profiles coexisting with real human accounts might transform social media into a playground for automated posts. This is disturbing for individuals who seek authenticity in their online connections. Many people worry that these AI-powered profiles, which may resemble spam accounts, would swamp Instagram and Facebook with worthless content. Hayes’ statement appeared to confirm Meta’s future ambitions for flooding platforms with AI-generated “slop.”

However, these AI profiles aren’t wholly new. The meta-controlled, AI-generated accounts that are currently trending have been on Instagram and Facebook for more than a year. These profiles stopped posting about ten months ago after users mostly disregarded them. In fact, the majority of the AI profiles Meta mentioned had already been erased. The remaining profiles have not posted any new content since April 2024, but their chat feature remains operational.

People’s negative reactions to the prospect of AI bots taking up space on Facebook and Instagram led many to believe that the existing bots were the ones Hayes mentioned in the Financial Times. However, Meta has not yet introduced any new functionality. The profiles that users are currently observing are simply part of Meta’s continuing experimentation. Hayes added that Meta intends to provide tools for consumers to construct AI profiles. These profiles will coexist with conventional human accounts, but the idea has yet to be fully realized.

Following this news, many users regarded the AI profiles to be unimpressive and of poor quality. While Meta has great intentions for AI, the current results have sparked more suspicion than enthusiasm. If these AI profiles continue to dominate, social media may eventually become saturated with irrelevant content. Meta’s AI-powered strategy begs major issues about the future of meaningful engagement on its platforms.

Pro-Trump critics have accused Elon Musk’s platform, X, of limiting their voices, creating an online discussion. This follows assertions by famous conservatives that they have been unfairly persecuted for questioning Musk’s ideas.

Laura Loomer, a political activist known for her conservative views, has expressed worries regarding H-1B visas. Musk supports these visas, and Loomer’s criticism sparked an unexpected outcome. She alleges her account was unverified and demonetized, accusing Musk of “free speech fraud.” However, Loomer’s charges have yet to be substantiated.

To add to the drama, conservative activist Charles C. Johnson alleges his account was blocked for embarrassing Musk. He wrote about Musk’s father’s purported ties to an emerald mine, which Musk has often denied. Johnson believes that his account was targeted because of this post. However, no evidence has emerged to back up his charges.

Elon Musk has always championed free expression, describing it as the “bedrock of democracy.” However, critics refer to his activities on X, contradicting this attitude. In 2022, for example, Musk’s platform momentarily blocked journalists who were reporting on the suspension of an account tracking his private jet. This sparked questions about whether Musk supports open discourse on his platform.

On Christmas Day, Bluesky, a growing social network, announced the launch of its new trending topics feature. The feature is currently in beta and available to desktop and mobile app users. This new feature keeps users up to speed on the most frequently discussed topics in the app, allowing them to participate with the most recent trends.

Accessing Trending Topics on Bluesky

Desktop users can see trending topics in the right sidebar, providing a convenient glance at popular discussions. Mobile users can access the trending topics section by tapping the search button, making it simple to stay updated on the latest trends.

Currently, the feature is only available in English. However, Bluesky has announced that it intends to improve this service over time, with additional languages and improvements coming in future versions. Users can turn off trending topics if they don’t want to see them. This can be accomplished by going to Settings > Content and Media and unchecking the “Enable Trending Topics” option.

Bluesky’s new trending topics are also compatible with the platform’s muted word feature. If you have previously muted specific words or phrases, they will not appear in the hot topics area. This personalized touch guarantees that the feature integrates neatly with the user’s choices.

Blue Sky’s Competitive Advantage

While Bluesky has only recently launched this functionality, third-party programs such as Greysky have already included trending themes. Bluesky’s immediate competitors, such as Threads, started rolling out the service to US users in March and expanded it to Japan in October. In contrast, Bluesky’s hot topics are being tested globally, resulting in a more comprehensive user experience.
Bluesky, with over 25 million active users, is constantly improving its platform. The addition of trending themes is just the first in a series of enhancements that Bluesky intends to implement to ensure its users have a better, more interesting experience.

Instagram is testing a feature that will let you see Story Highlights from pals you may have missed. The social media platform is experimenting with presenting these Highlights at the bottom of your Stories tray. This is the section at the top of your feed where you typically find Stories from your friends.
A spokeswoman for Meta confirmed the functionality, adding, “We’re always working on new ways to help people connect in Stories and are testing bringing recent Highlights to the end of the tray with a small group of people.”
Ahmed Ghanem, a social media expert, first identified the function. Its goal is to ensure that users do not miss vital content from friends and relatives. Instagram’s feed has been increasingly congested with sponsored posts, Reels, and other content. As a result, users frequently miss Stories from the individuals they do follow.

Expectations from Update

This new test will move unseen Story Highlights to the end of the Stories tray, allowing users to catch up on what they’ve missed. These Highlights are handpicked posts that users store on their profiles, as opposed to ordinary Stories, which expire after 24 hours. The unseen Highlights will emerge only after you’ve gone through all of the Stories in the tray.

Meta adds that viewers will be able to see Story Highlights from the previous week. However, if you follow a lot of accounts and don’t always reach the end of the tray, you may miss the Highlights. This feature is intended to allow users to revisit content that they may have missed previously.

Instagram seeks to increase user engagement and connection by displaying missed Story Highlights. With the steady influx of fresh information, this feature provides a more organized approach for users to find meaningful stuff they may have overlooked. It is still in the testing phase with a small group of people, but if successful, might be scaled up.
This update underscores Instagram’s focus on improving the user experience by making connecting with friends and family easier. It’s unclear whether the feature will be permanent, but it demonstrates Instagram’s commitment to enhancing its Stories experience.

The attribution to the original poster will appear in the image or video’s upper left corner, indicating who owns the content.

How to use The Feature

To use this new functionality, simply long-press any media uploaded to Threads or tap the repost button. The “Use media” option will appear in the pop-up window, just below the regular “Repost” and “Quote” options. Mosseri said that the feature will be available to all users soon, and he urged community feedback as they continue to enhance the tool.

However, not everyone is happy with the shift. Some creators expressed worry on Mosseri’s article, asking whether there was a mechanism to prevent media re-sharing. These individuals expressed concern that their content would be shared without their permission, potentially diverting visitors away from their original work.

The Threads team answered that users could disable media reuse under the app’s settings. Users can also specify who can reuse the media they share by altering quote-post parameters.
This new Instagram Threads feature aims to make sharing content more effective and creative while respecting the rights of the original authors.
